Audiology is primarily a diagnostic degree to rule out abnormal hearing sensitivity, auditory speech perception, and central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). In most instances, an audiologist provides amplification options (hearing aids) and aural rehabilitation to facilitate hearing and communication ability.
Speech-language pathology, on the other hand, is a diagnostic and therapeutic degree for communication problems related to phonology, morphology, syntax, hearing impairment, semantics, and adult neurological/cognitive disorders. A speech pathologist (with demonstrable clinical competency) is uniquely qualified to plan and provide skilled intervention for CAPD.
Specifically, a doctor of audiology degree Au.D. or Ph.D. degree in audiology does not include specific courses regarding speech-language therapy for communication impairment. Therefore, the formulation of an audiology treatment plan—even from an “educational audiologist” with or without an earned degree in education—is not a substitute for speech-language pathology.

Consultation and Contractual Services
Dr. Hooks is available for consultation to families, as a means of facilitating test interpretation,
implementation of goals, and the specialized strategies. This service is for a fixed fee, at a four-hour off-site maximum. Please call for more details regarding review of records, recommendations, and serving as an expert witness.
Contractual speech therapy services are negotiable for delivery in a skill nursing or assistive living setting. Additionally, contractual speech therapy services are available for consideration in a public or private school setting.
